Brooklyn’s CurlFest: a Celebration of Natural Hair and The Magic of Melanin [Pics Inside]

Organized by the ladies of CurlyGirlCollective, Curlfest is THE biggest natural hair event held here in America. While the event has been going on the last few years, this year was the biggest year, drawing in a crowd of well over 10,000 people to Brooklyn’s Prospect Park.

In truth, it’s hard to even describe Curlfest in words, but suffice it to say there was plenty of melanin magic in the house. Folks fly in from all over the country to descend upon Prospect park, where they are able to dance, laugh, snap pics, and shop from more than 50 black-owned vendors.

“CurlFest is important because we celebrate ourselves but we also feel empowered by looking around and seeing like-minded people and our love for each other,” Charisse Higgins, one of the founders of the Curly Girl Collective, told HuffPost. “History is being made and we’re changing history, and it needs to continue to happen.”

This was my first year attending, and while it was overwhelming at times, it was also great to connect with an meet many of my favorite bloggers, brands, celebs, and models!
