How to Keep Your Protective Styles Fresh For Weeks or Even Months

Keep Your Protective Styles Fresh

I’ve been wearing protective styles for the last two years and I don’t intend to stop anytime soon. I wear them for a month or two, take a break, and then put them right back in. Mothering, working, pandemic schooling, and wifing, leaves very little time for washing, styling, twisting and fluffing. As much as I love my natural hair, the longer it gets the more exhausting I find the upkeep.  Which is why when the folks over at Pantene contacted me to try the new Waterless Collection I dove right in. The thing is, protective styles aren’t really protecting your hair if you aren’t taking care of your tresses by ensuring your scalp is clean and your strands are conditioned. Typically, I’d simply apply a hair oil to my scalp, but this, of course, doesn’t actually clean anything. This is where Pantene’s Waterless Collection (available in store and online at Walmart) comes into play:

Bear in mind, these products can be used on loose hair as well, so you don’t have to wait for a protective hairstyle to try this line.  That being said, washing and conditioning your hair the traditional way doesn’t really bode well for protective styles. Shampoo and conditioner can be beastly to try to wash out of your hair while wearing extensions, so finding a product line suitable for protective style queens like your girl is always a win. So far, I’ve used three of the above pictured products and by using them I’ve been extending the life of my protective styles. How you ask?

Let’s start with the Pantene Cheat Day Dry Shampoo Foam

Pantene’s Cheat Day Dry Shampoo Foam is a whipped cleansing foam that dissolves oil and refreshes your style, no washing required. Your hair won’t feel dry or chalky upon use and it won’t fade your color. The non-drying, fast-absorbing, nourishing formula contains pro-vitamin B5 and orchid flower water in the foam, which work to cleanse your hair. It also contains tapioca from the cassava root to absorb excess oil from roots and scalp. It does not contain drying alcohols, sulfates, or parabens, so you can trust both your hair and your extensions aren’t being exposed to harsh chemicals.

I use the Pantene Cheat Day Dry Shampoo Foam by spraying the foam onto my fingertips, applying it directly to my roots, and then rubbing it in.

The Cheat Day Dry Shampoo works great with The Pantene Mist Behaving Dry Conditioner Mist and The Pantene Smooth Talker Dry Conditioning Oil.

Pantene Mist Behaving Dry Conditioner Mist

The Pantene Mist Behaving Dry Conditioner Mist is a perfect melange between a leave-in conditioner and styling spray. On loose hair, it delivers frizz protection between washes. If your hair is feeling dry and tangled, and you don’t have time to wash and condition, the dry conditioner mist delivers a burst of detangling and de-frizzing magic in seconds.  I’ve used it on my protective hairstyle and my hair at the roots felt soft and nourished.

If you’re looking for an extra bit of shine in addition to the benefits of a conditioner, then look no further than The Pantene Smooth Talker Dry Conditioning Oil.  I particularly like to use this oil with my protective hairstyles. I simply shake the can, hold it 6-8 inches away and spray my hair, not the scalp. The shine it gives off is heavenly. Also, the active conditioning ingredients, including aloe vera and pro-vitamin B5, provide deep moisture and nourishment to every strand without weighing it down.

I also received The Pantene Hot Mama Heat Activated Hair (Re)Freshing Spray. While I haven’t tried it yet, this refreshing spray is perfect for we heat-friendly naturalistas.

Yes, gasp, I use heat on my hair. I blow dry and sometimes lightly flat-iron my hair before braid-outs and twists-outs. I like the additional stretch and body of heat-styled hair. The Pantene Hot Mama Heat Activated Hair (Re)Freshing Spray is a heat protectant spray that nourishes and protects strands between washes. It can also protect your hair against thermal damage caused by curling irons and straighteners.

As much as I love the ease of protective styling, feeling as though your hair is dirty (and let’s face it) stinky from lack of washing isn’t so fun. I swear one time I washed my hair while wearing my weave and because I didn’t dry my hair fully, I was left with hair you could smell before you knew I was in the room. Since this collection is completely waterless you can trust that you won’t be walking around with stink-head when wearing your protective styles.  You can find this line of products online and in-store at Walmart.
