#ISSALIE Media Outlets Claim Black Women Intend To Boycott The New Black Panther Movie
If there is one thing I learned about online media last year, it’s that you can’t trust everything you read. Indeed, a vast number of popular media outlets have used their influence to propagate fictitious accounts of how the black collective feels about any given topic. I don’t know about you, but black twitter doesn’t speak for me.
When the Black Panther trailer was released earlier this year, however, I can say with absolute certainty that black folks were/are pumped. We literally could not control our excitement. And can you blame us? The all black cast has us all pretty excited:
And as this is a site run by moi, a black woman, most of my readers are black women, too. Hey, sis! And y’all made my post announcing the movie go megaviral (thank you). Suffice to say, black women, are beyond here for this movie. Hell, I plan to go to the theatre dressed in full west African regalia, including a Gele (if i can find one, lol). So we’re excited, we’re proud, and we can’t wait for the premier next month.
So color me perplexed when I read that we, black women, are supposedly planning to Boycott the movie. Yes, y’all. Headlines like this are are actively making the rounds on my timeline:
These media outlets claim, that we, black women, are so outraged that Michael B. Jordan is not dating a black woman, that we would use this fact as an opportunity to sabotage the movie.
Friends, I have many aspirations for 2018, one of them being that we stop cancelling every damn body for every little thing. Another? That we put an end to the faux outrage at every single turn. Being mad for the sake of being mad is so 2017. Also, as it pertains to the Black Panther movie? We ain’t even checkin for Michael B. Jordan like that. My friend, and our former beauty editor, Vicky J, said it best:
I’m all for being woke, and black and proud, but this foolishiness? Nah, y’all are not going to rest the success of this movie squarely on the shoulders of black women. Not today, Satan.
