Black Couples In Hollywood: When The Woman Is The Star Do The Relationships Stand A Chance?
After 10 years together, Jennifer Hudson and David Ortega have split, and things ain’t pretty.
“Today, Jennifer requested and received a protective order against her ex-fiancé. Jennifer’s actions are solely taken in the best interest of their son [8-year-old David Daniel Otunga Jr.],” the statement concluded.
Otunga’s attorney, Tracy M. Rizzo, released a statement to PEOPLE on behalf of the former pro wrestler following the split news accusing the Oscar winner of getting the protective order to stop him from getting primary custody of their son.
“David Otunga has been trying to negotiate the terms of an amicable parenting agreement with Ms. Hudson for several weeks now…However, when it became apparent to Ms. Hudson that Mr. Otunga would be the parent granted residential care of the child, as a result of Mr. Otunga being the child’s primary caregiver while Ms. Hudson pursues her career all over the world, Ms. Hudson decided to file a meritless Petition for Order of Protection in an effort to gain an unfair advantage in the custody dispute,” the statement read.
Clearly, things are going to be messy. But, unlike celebs like Mary J. Blige, Tamar Braxton, and Jill Scott, Jennifer Hudson wasn’t married to David, so she will likely avoid the expense of a contested prenup and/or alimony payments.
Celebs breaking up ain’t nothin new. These people have money for days so paying a lawyer to get them out of souring relationships is fairly eaasy. It’s rarely pleasant, but they seem to make it out okay. But with the recent failing of several high profile relationships, I’m beginning to wonder if there is something about men not being able to stomach their celebrity wives in the limelight.
While Vince was/is a record executive and was well-known and connected in Hollywood before Tamar, I would argue that she holds far more celebrity power, and as such, I wonder if that played a role in their demise. In a recent interview, Tamar’s mother alleges that Vince would be physically abusive towards Tamar because of her “mouth.”
What do you guys think? Are these relationships doomed from the start?
