Loved your other posts on Halloween costumes and make up when you said that “culture is not a costume” and yet highlight a woman who is insulting my Mexican heritage by mocking a sacred day in Hispanic culture, the Day of the Dead. The Catrina is not a costume for Halloween and should be respected along with all other cultures. I was surprised to see you bring attention to such glaring racism.
So if you know that I am sensitive about respecting people’s cultures, wouldn’t it stand to reason that I had absolutely no idea about The day of the dead? And that this picture made the cut because I have zero knowledge about this tradition? Why not say, “Hey, lisa, just so you know, “such and such pictures is offensive to Mexicans because of “xyz.” instead of coming in here and assuming I would intentionally disrespect you. In fact, as I write this, I still don’t even know which picture was the one causing offense. “Glaring racism” is a stretch. Indeed you can accuse me of culturally ignorant, but a racist? Hardly. I am a black woman in America, born of two immigrant parents. I have not the means nor the power to be racist.
