“There Was a Sale Of Black Child To White Children In The Classroom” Mock Slave Auction AT NJ School Sparks Outrage
I never shy away from our history. I know that slavery is an important part of our past and it’s important that children understand this history. That being said, I can’t begin to understand why a black child was put up for sale in a a mock auction at a New Jersey School.
According to reports, Fifth-graders at the Jefferson School in Maplewood were instructed by a substitute teacher to take part in the auction. The students told their classroom teacher about the auction, at which point she sent a letter home to the parents and notified the district. The auction, which had been videotaped, was not a part of the curriculum. The school district issued this statement:
